Some great Hollywood stories came to a sudden end in the 1920s -- and we're not talking about people with bad voices!

1921: Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle was arrested for causing the death of Virginia Rappe. Rumor had it that he raped her and she was crushed by his immense weight.  He was acquitted, but audiences stopped coming.

1922: Director William Desmond Taylor is found shot dead in his home. In the ensuing investigation two actresses, Mary Miles Minter and Mabel Normand are briefly suspected, but neither is arrested. Both their careers are ruined.

1929: John Gilbert finally gives up on Greta Garbo. In April he proposed to her for the third time(she refused); in May he married Ina Claire.
