JOSEPHINE BAKER (1906-1975)
It may or may not surprise you
that many movie stars of the 1930's started off as stage stars of the 1920's.
An African American born in Mississippi, Josephine Baker went to Paris to
make her fortune in La Negre Review (1925). She was a dancer, singer,
and comic rolled into one. The most remembered image is of her dancing wearing
a skirt made of bananas -- and nothing else. Her first film came out in
1927 (La Sirene des Tropiques), but she didn't give up her day, uh,
night job.
