Welcome to Theodote's House of Rhetoric. The original Theodote didn't own a house. Nor did she own a farm, or a vineyard -- or any visible means of support, for that matter. Theodote relied upon the generous support of her friends -- and every man she met was a very good friend. She was a probably no better than she should be, which made her one of the most sought after courtesans in Athens. In her honor, I've opened a house focusing on another courtesan who was active in Athens in Theodote's day, Dame Rhetoric. Since rhetoricians and whores have been linked since the classical era, the pairing seems natural. These two ladies should get along quite well. The women in this house are those historic persons who practiced both arts, sometimes simultaneously. Their stories are accurate, but you won't find much compulsive citation of classical sources -- the aim here is to entertain. Each woman has decorated her own room, complete with appropriate music, so she'll feel more at home. Fear not -- the music will not play unless you click the control on the bottom of the page! Enjoy your visit. And be out of here by sunrise.
