THE BOOKS

ruler

In lieu of over priced champagne, the House of Rhetoric offers a chance to purchase books. The books are related to the ladies of the House and/or  their times. These selections are available through a partnership with Amazon books. If anything looks appetizing, click on the link and give it a look. Buy it. Of course, if you buy it through this link, there's a kickback. What do you expect from a cathouse bar? But , unlike a bar, it costs you nothing extra.  And I'll only be using the credit to buy more books so that we can recruit new women (maybe even a man or two) for the House.

BOOKS FOR THEODOTE AND ASPASIA

For light entertainment, a collection similar to the tone of mine is  Uppity Women of Ancient Times .

A general book on Athenian obsessions is Courtesans and Fishcakes : The Consuming. Passions of Athens.

For feminist scholars, a fascinating work is  The Reign of the Phallus: Sexual Politics in Ancient Athens .

For serious scholars who like their sources original:  The Landmark Thucydides.

BOOKS FOR THEODORA

Another fun book is  Uppity Women of Medieval Times .

Another  gender book is Women, Men, and Eunichs: Gender in Byzantium .

This is a general history book, but Theodora and Justinian get coverage:   Byzantium: The Early Centuries .

For those who prefer enlightenment through video, we have Byzantium .

BOOKS  FOR MAIMIE

Well, of course you must read Maimie herself! The Maimie Papers: Letters From an Ex-Prostitute.

Another memoir by a prostitute:  The Underworld Sewer: A Prostitute Reflects on Life in the Trade.

A well written fictional account: Maggie : A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane.

BOOKS FOR WAKA

The only English book on Waka is out of print now. There is a link to an "out of print" book specialist below.   In the meantime, try one of these books on the old West :

Soiled Doves: Prostitutes in the Early West  is often touching.

Daughters of Joy, Sisters of Misery: Prostitutes in the American West  is more scholarly.

BOOKS FOR JOSEPHINE

At last! A biography of Mrs. Butler!

Another fun book:

Wild Women: Crusaders, Curmudgeons, and Completely Corsetless Ladies in the Otherwise Virtuous Victorian Era

BOOKS FOR HEDY

Hollywood Glamour Portraits has a nice photo of Hedy, among others.

Check out her career in A Biographical Dictionary of Film

And don't forget her star turns:

Ecstacy  was her first film and has the scandelous nude scene.

White Cargo is also worth a look.

BOOKS FOR THEROIGNE

A good (only?) biography of her: Madness and Revolution

The most popular book on the Revolution is Citizens.

BOOKS FOR VERONICA

The Honest Courtesan: Veronica Franco, Citizen and Writer  is a scholarly tome, so watch out for untranslated Italian!

Woman Poets of the Italian Rennaissance  has many fine examples.

Of course, there's her star turn: Dangerous Beauty.

BOOKS FOR MANUELA

Poor Manuela is usually only discussed as an adjunct to her famous lover. Here are a couple of general suggestions.

Some one has finally written a novel about Manuela! It is fiction, but based on research.

A new biography of Bolivar has just come out in paper:  Bolivar: Liberator of a Continent

A wonderful novel of The Liberator's last days mentions Manuela:  The General in His Labyrinth .

Let's get  scholarly!  Coded Encounters: Writing, Gender ,and Ethnicity in Colonial Latin America.

 BOOKS FOR TEXAS GUINAN

She runs the bar here. She ran a lot of bars. Check out the boss.

Texas Guinan: Queen of the Nightclubs is the latest.

The one I first read is Hello, Sucker! The Story of Texas Guinan. I fear it is out of print now!

 BOOKS FOR TIMARCHUS

A thorough discussion is in Greek Homosexuality .

NO LUCK?
